CAIRO – 7 June 2017: The death of Cheick Tiote, the Ivorian International and former Newcastle Player, on Monday left the football world shocked.

After his death, Newcastle supporters paid tribute to the Ivorian by creating petition to retire the number 24 Tiote used to wear while playing at Newcastle’s stadium “ St. James Park.”

The petition has seen more than 1,000 signatures. The fans of Newcastle commonly known as the Magpies are hoping to collect 1,500 signatures, in order for the petition to be seriously issued to the club’s officials.

The petition read, "In the light of the legends death, the shirt number should be retired in honour of his life. A Newcastle legend taken too soon. Get your friends and family to sign. Share on social media. Let's show Tiote how much we loved him.”

Tiote died on Monday after collapsing in China while training for his team Beijing Enterprises. The Ivorian International has previously played Anderlecht (Belguim), Roda JC (Netherlands), FC Twente (Netherlands), Newcastle United (England), and Beijing Enterprises (China.)
