CAIRO – 5 June 2017: After news emerged today that Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain have decided to cut off their diplomatic relationships with Qatar and close all air, sea, and land ports to Qatari vessels, the World Cup 2022 is at stake.

Shortly after the news broke, FIFA released a statement saying their confidence in Qatar’s ability to host the World Cup has begun to diminish.

Qatar’s bid for the event has been met with skepticism early on. First people doubted how the world cup could be hosted Qatar given the country’s weather conditions in the summer. Then came the bribery scandal that contributed to the removal of Sepp Blatter.

Shortly after the news broke that Qatar had been abusing migrant workers from Southeast Asia, providing them with inhumane iving standards and dangerous working environments.

The question is once again raised wether Qatar will be able to hold on to their bid for the 2022 FIFA World Cup or if the federation will decide to host the games elsewhere.
