CAIRO – 5 June 2017: Ivory Coast footballer Cheick Tiote died Monday, aged 30, after collapsing during training in China.

"It is with deep sadness I confirm that Cheick Tiote sadly passed away earlier today after collapsing in training," said spokesman Emanuele Palladino to the BBC.

He added, "We cannot say any more at the moment and we request that his family's privacy be respected at this difficult time. We ask for all your prayers."

Tiote, a former Newcastle midfielder and Ivory Coast National Team member, was transferred in February to second-tier team Beijing Enterprises Group F.C.

The native Ivorian played internationally for RSC Anderlecht (Belgium), Roda J.C. (Netherlands), Twente (Netherlands), Newcastle (England) and BJ Enterprises (China).
