CAIRO – 10 July 2018: Arsenal announced on Monday that they have signed Uruguayan midfielder, Lucas Torreira, from Sampdoria for an undisclosed fee.

The player shined with his national team at the World Cup in Russia and he led them towards the quarter finals before losing 2-0 to France.

“In Lucas Torreira, we have found a young player who is a very bright talent. A midfielder with great quality, I have enjoyed watching his performances for Sampdoria in the past two seasons, and we all saw him do very well for Uruguay in the World Cup,” Arsenal manager, Unai Emery, told the club official website.

Torreira, 22, left home when he was 17 to play for Italy’s Pescara. He played there for three years before joining Sampdoria where he spent the last two years.

Emery added, "He is a young player already with good experience, but who wants to keep on growing. We welcome Lucas to Arsenal and look forward to him joining us soon for pre-season."

The Uruguayan will wear Arsenal shirt number 11 previously worn by Germany’s Mesut Özil, who took the vacant number 10, following the departure of Jack Wilshere to West Ham United.
