CAIRO – 1 June 2018: Uruguay striker Edison Cavani has expressed his wish to face Russia in the first game instead of Egypt at the World Cup on June 14.

"I was hoping to meet Russia at the opening game, not Egypt," Cavani said during a documentary broadcast on BeIN Max on Thursday.

"Facing the host in the opening game is good, and I look forward to Russia's match."

Uruguay, who achieved the World Cup title twice, plays in Group A at the World Cup alongside Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the host nation, Russia.

Uruguay will open their participation at the competition on June 15 against Egypt and they will face Saudi Arabia on June 20 before facing Russia at their last group stage game on June 25.


Uruguay manager Oscar Tabarez, announced the preliminary squad of the national team participating at the World Cup in Russia.

Goalkeepers:
Fernando Muslera, Martín Silva, Martín Campaña.

Defenders:
Maxi Pereira, Diego Godín, Martín Cáceres, José María Giménez, Sebastián Coates, Gastón Silva and Guillermo Varela.

Midfielders:
Nahitan Nández, Matías Vecino, Lucas Torreira, Rodrigo Bentancur, Federico Valverde, Carlos Sánchez, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, Diego Laxalt Jonathan Urretaviscaya, Cristian Rodríguez, Nicolás Lodeiro and Gastón Ramírez.

Strikers:
Luis Suarez, Edinson Cavani, Cristhian Stuani and Maximiliano Gomez.
