CAIRO – 28 May 2018: Dani Carvajal will join the Spanish national team on Monday as he starts to recover from his recent muscle injury, hoping to catch up with the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Real Madrid defender was substituted in the 3-1 win over Liverpool in the Champions League final on Saturday after suffering an injury in his right thigh muscles.

The player’s tests revealed Monday that he will be away from the pitch for three weeks, as opposed to the initially expected duration, as the injury was expected to be more dangerous.

The Spanish coaching staff allowed Real Madrid's players to take a few days off before joining the camp, but Carafajal decided to spend his days off with the team to begin the recovery phase to assure his seat in the World Cup.

Julen Lopetegui will decide later whether he will need Carvajal’s services or not.
