CAIRO – 2 May 2018: FIFA invited former Egyptian International footballer, Ahmed Hossam (known as Mido), to represent Egypt at the 2018 World Cup opening ceremony in Russia on June 14.

“I am happy to be invited by FIFA to represent Egypt at the World Cup opening ceremony in Russia,” Mido tweeted on Wednesday.

Egypt qualified to the 2018 World Cup in Russia to end 28 years of absence as they last played in the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

The World Cup draw put Egypt in Group A, alongside Uruguay, Saudi Arabia and the host nation, Russia.

Egypt will play their first game in the group stage against the South American team, Uruguay, on Friday June 15, before facing the host nation, Russia, on Tuesday June 19.

Egypt will end their participation at the group stage against their Arab rivals, Saudi Arabia, on Monday June 25.

Mido represented the Egyptian national team when he was 17; he was also part of the team that achieved the 2006 African Cup of Nations title.
