CAIRO – 22 March 2018: Despite the current political crisis between England and Russia that threatens English fans’ appearance at the World Cup in Russia in the summer, Russian Ambassador to the UK, Alexander Yakovenko, believes that England fans will be safe in the World Cup.

“First of all I'll be happy to welcome all the fans; they will be safe in Russia, we're confident and we will be happy to welcome everybody," Yakovenko said on Thursday.
Relations between UK and Russia have been affected by the alleged poisoning of former Russian spy Sergei Skripal in Salisbury.

British Prime Minister Theresa May had announced earlier that no ministers or members of the Royal Family will go to World Cup finals in Russia.

Yakovenko added, “All the necessary measures are being taken and British special authorities are in contact with the Russian special authorities to provide security for the fans and all British [individuals] who will be in Russia’s territory.”

England’s fans have been attacked by Russia’s fans at EURO 2016 in France before and after their game at the group stage that ended with a 1-1 draw.

England plays in Group G alongside Tunisia, Panama and Belgium.
