CAIRO – 21 January 2018: Watford announced on Sunday that they have sacked their Portuguese manager, Marco Silva, after the 2-0 loss to Leicester City on Saturday.

“For the security and success of the football club, the board believes that it has to make a change,” a Watford statement said on Sunday.

Watford are suffering this season in the Premier League. They are 10th in the table with 26 points, only five points above the relegation zone.

The Watford board believes that Everton's interest to recruit Silva that was announced in October after they sacked their manager, Ronald Koeman, was the reason behind Silva’s lack of focus.

The statement added “The club is convinced that the appointment of Silva was the right one and had it not been for the unwarranted approach by a Premier League rival for his services, we would have continued to prosper under his leadership.”

Silva, 40, was appointed as Watford manager last summer and he started the season well but the team started faltering in the recent weeks and have only won one match in their last 11 matches.
