CAIRO – 17 January 2018: Egypt’s national handball team opened their participation at the 2018 African Men's Handball Championship by defeating Morocco 33-28 on Wednesday.

Egypt dominated the game from the start, ending the first half 17-15 in the lead, and they continued their dominance during the second half to end the game 33-28.

Egyptian national team player Eslam Hassan was named the best player of the game after his amazing performance that broke Morocco’s defense.

Egypt will face Nigeria on Thursday, and they will rest for two days before meeting Angola on Sunday, January 21. Egypt will then play their last game in the first stage against the Democratic Republic of Congo on Monday.

The draw was held in November and put Egypt in Group B alongside Angola, Morocco, Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The best three teams in the tournament will qualify to the 2019 Men's World Handball Championship in Denmark and Germany.

Three Arab nations monopolized the gold medal since the tournament’s inception: Tunisia won nine titles, Algeria won seven titles and Egypt won six.

Gabon is hosting the 23rd edition of the tournament between January 17 and January 27, 2018.
