CAIRO – 1 December 2017 : Egyptian national team former player, Mohamed Abdel-Latif, known as Mimi El Sherbini, spoke to Egypt Today about his predictions for the World Cup ahead of the World Cup draw on Friday.
“I think a European team will win the title as Brazil and Argentina do not have big stars like before,“ El-Sherbini told Egypt Today.
El Sherbini is one of the most famous sports figures in Egypt—he was a great player for Al Ahly and the national team. He won 1959 African Cup of nations with Egypt.
He is also one of the most famous commentators on football games in Egypt, his voice is associated with important times for Egyptian football.
Speaking about Egypt chances in the World Cup, El Sherbini said, “we are going to the World Cup to show our football to the world. We should prepare ourselves well to be able to compete with these big teams. We should play friendly games against first class teams to overcome fears of them.”
Mimi spoke about Mohamed Salah after his great performance with Liverpool in the Premier League, noting, “Salah is the best player in Egypt national team and he will play a great role in Egypt campaign at World Cup. However, Salah needs the help of his teammates for a great performance in the World Cup.”
Egyptian fans hope to hear El Sherbini’s voice again on football matches as he did in 1986 World Cup, hoping for his return with the 2018 World Cup.
Asked about the possibility of commentating on Egypt games at World Cup, he said, “I hope to do that but I think it is difficult now.”
