CAIRO – 9 November 2017: Egyptian Football Federation member Magdy Abdel Ghany promised football fans in Egypt that the national team will play high competitive games in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

“Our participation in the World Cup in Russia would be more than just an honorary participation,” Abdel Ghany spoke on Wednesday during a celebration to honor the Egypt national team.

Abdel Ghany was on the Egyptian squad during the 1990 World Cup in Italy, and he scored Egypt’s only goal in the tournament in the team’s 1-1 draw against the Netherlands.

Abdel Ghany compared Egypt’s squad in 1990 and in 2018, stating, “n 1990, we didn’t have many International players; most of the players in the squad were playing in local competitions.”

He added, “on the contrary, this generation has many players playing abroad, like Mohamed Salah, Ramadan Sobhi, Mohamed El Neny and Mahmoud ‘Trezeguet’.”

In 1990, Egypt had only two players playing abroad: Magdy Abdel Ghany was playing in Portugal with S.C. Beira-Mar, and Magdy Tolba was playing at Greece’s Paok.
