CAIRO –13 October 2017: Zamalek club manager Alaa Mekled announced that the club is withdrawing from the Egyptian Premier League following their draw against Tanta.

Zamalek were up to a frustrating draw against Tanta at Mahalla Stadium. The Whites took the lead through Salah Ashour with a decent close range volley, before Mohamed Gaber leveled things for Tanta off the penalty spot.

The game saw controversial calls from the referee as Tanta was assigned two dubious penalty calls, one where the hosts were brought back to the tie.

“Club president Mortada Mansour called me and informed me that the team will not continue in the competition in the presence of the current referees committee and the current EFA board,” Mekled told ON Sport.

“Based on this decision we refused to be available in the post game press conference and refrained the players from giving any interviews; everybody is tied by this decision.”
