Cairo – 9 October 2017:

Many Egyptians experienced on Sunday night the joy of qualifying to the World Cup for the first time in their lives, as Egypt’s last qualification to the 1990 World Cup in Italy.

Egyptians posted that Egypt qualified to the World Cup on social media for the first time, as the internet was a new invention in 1990.

Egyptians celebrated the qualification with many memes.

The first meme comes from an Egyptian movie called “La Tarago Wa La Esteslam.” A man steps into a meeting between two gangsters, and these two gangsters are labeled with the flags of Brazil and Germany. It portrays Egypt as a new gangster, with the man saying, “Hi football kings, what’s up?”

One Egyptian wrote on his Facebook account, “The whole team should travel to Russia by bus; only Salah should take the plane.”

This joke refers to the importance of Mohamed Salah to the Egyptian national team more than any other player.

This cartoon of Salah and Lionel Messi mocks Messi for not having a Ballon d’Or award.

It insinuates that Salah will take Egypt to the World Cup and become the best player in the world, while Messi and Argentina are struggling to qualify to the World Cup.
