CAIRO – 4 October 2017: Minister of Youth and Sports, Khaled Abdel Aziz, warned Egyptian fans who will attend the game against Congo at Borg El Arab Stadium on Sunday from repeating the violence Egyptians instigated in the 1994 World Cup qualifiers.

“It is the most important game for Egypt in the last 28 years; don’t repeat what happened in 1994,” Abdel Aziz spoke on Monday to TV Station ON Sport.

Egyptian fans threw stones against Zimbabwe’s national team during a game at the 1994 World Cup qualifiers when the Egyptian team was winning. FIFA decided to replay the game in France and the game ended 0-0, eliminating the Egyptian team from qualifying.

Abdel Aziz added, “I know the fans’ enthusiasm and passion but I want them to be calm and wise and follow security instructions.”

Egyptian fans will travel from across Egypt to support the national team against Congo on Sunday. This game could be the qualifying game if Egypt wins and Uganda loses their game against Ghana on Sunday.

Egypt tops Group E with nine points, two points more than Uganda. Ghana sits at third place in the group with five points while Congo sits at the bottom of the pool with one point.
