CAIRO – 3 August 2017: The legendary Egyptian former defender of Al-Ahly and the Egyptian National Team Wael Gomaa celebrates his 42nd birthday on August 3.

The 42 year old defender had a prosperous career with Al-Ahly SC and the Egyptian National Team having won several trophies. As a result, Egypt Today decided to do a brief review of Gomaa’s career after joining Al-Ahly.

In 2000 - 2001 season, Al-Ahly officials decided to sign with Gomaa after his great performance in Egypt Cup final match against Ghazl al-Mahalla.

Gomaa played for Al-Ahly in a friendly match against Real Madrid in August 2001, and made his official debut in the match against Angolan side Petro Atletico in CAF Champions League 2001 on August 12.

He won the Egyptian League with Al-Ahly eight times. In addition to the Egyptian League, Gomaa won CAF African Champion League six times with Al-Ahly. Moreover, he managed to win CAF Super Cup six times, Egyptian Super Cup six times and a bronze medal at FIFA Club World Cup 2006.

Moving on to the achievements with the national team, he won with Egypt the African cup of Nations three times in 2006, 2008, and 2010. In addition to the African Cup of Nations, he won World Military Cup once in 2001.

On January 8, 2011, Wael Gomaa has made his 100th international appearance for Egypt against Uganda in the Nile Basin Tournament. He scored his only international goal against Kenya in the semi final Egypt went on to win the match 5-1.

In May 2014, Gomaa announced he officially retired from football; heading to work in the media sports field for a sports channel.
