ATLANTA – 8 July 2026: Egypt’s dramatic FIFA World Cup campaign ended in bitter disappointment after a 3-2 last-16 defeat to holders Argentina, with officials, coaches and football figures accusing the refereeing team of decisive errors that denied the Pharaohs a place in the quarter-finals.
Egypt appeared on the brink of one of the tournament’s greatest upsets, leading 2-0 with just 11 minutes remaining against the defending champions before conceding three late goals to suffer a heartbreaking elimination.
The controversy centered on several key decisions.
Egypt had a goal by Mostafa Zico in the 62nd minute ruled out following a VAR review that judged an Egyptian foul in the build-up.
The Pharaohs also appealed unsuccessfully for a late penalty after Mohamed Salah was pulled inside the box, moments before Argentina broke forward to score a dramatic 92nd-minute winner.

Egyptian Minister of Youth and Sports Gohar Nabil said the national team had been subjected to “clear refereeing injustice,” arguing that the refereeing decisions played the decisive role in Egypt’s exit from the tournament.
The referee “would not allow Egypt to progress beyond the last 16,” Nabil said during a TV interview, asserting that a string of second-half decisions consistently favored Argentina and raised serious questions over the performance of the officiating team.
He added that the refereeing bias directly contributed to Egypt’s elimination despite one of the team’s strongest performances of the competition.
Head coach Hossam Hassan insisted Egypt had been the superior side on the pitch.
He argued that pressure exerted by the Argentine camp before the match over the appointment of French referee François Letexier had influenced the official’s decisions.
Hassan also accused FIFA of failing to uphold the principles of fair play, saying Egypt had been denied a clear penalty while a legitimate goal that would have put the Pharaohs 2-0 ahead was wrongly disallowed.
He further asserted Argentina’s decisive goal originated from an unpunished foul on an Egyptian player inside the penalty area, with neither the referee nor the VAR officials reviewing the incident before Argentina launched the counterattack that settled the match.
Official Complaint to FIFA
The Egyptian Football Association also escalated the dispute, with its president Hany Abo Rida submitting an official complaint to FIFA requesting an investigation into Letexier and his officiating team.
The federation accused the match officials of committing “grave refereeing mistakes” and applying double standards that ultimately cost Egypt its place in the tournament.
Egypt's run to the last 16 marked the nation's best-ever World Cup campaign.
The Pharaohs reached the knockout stage for the first time after finishing runners-up in Group G, following a 3-1 comeback victory over New Zealand and a 1-1 draw with Iran, before defeating Australia on penalties in the round of 32 to set up the meeting with defending champions Argentina.
Criticism of the officiating extended well beyond Egypt, with several prominent international figures questioning the refereeing decisions.

Football analyst Geronimo Morgans said he was “crying with Egyptians,” arguing that they had been the better side for much of the match before controversial decisions shifted momentum in Argentina’s favor.
“They’re leaving this World Cup with their heads held high,” he said. “What we witnessed tonight wasn’t football. It was a rigged spectacle.”
“This is Robbery. Egypt have been robbed.”
Portuguese manager José Mourinho criticized the disallowed Egyptian goal, an unpunished challenge on Mohamed Salah and the decision not to award Egypt a late penalty before Argentina scored the winner.
"It is not football anymore. It is a movie, and the ending has already been decided before the players even walk out of the tunnel."
World chess champion Garry Kasparov also denounced the inconsistent refereeing.
