CAIRO – 20 July 2017:Egypt put forward a request to host the U-23 African Cup of Nations, which is the qualifier for 2020 Summer Olympic games in Tokyo.

Minister of Youth and Sports Khaled Abdel Aziz and Egyptian Football Association President Hani Abo Rida talked with CAF President Ahmad Ahmad about hosting the tournament after Zambia announced they couldn’t host the competition.

“The Egyptian Football Association is committed to all the requirements and conditions, especially with the huge support of the Egyptian government to host such big events,” the Egyptian Football Association stated in their letter to CAF.

Egypt failed to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, and they hope to qualify for the next games in Tokyo.

Egypt reached the last eight in their last participation in the men’s football tournament in 2012 in London.

Egypt’s best football achievement in the Olympic Games was in Amsterdam in 1928 and in Tokyo in 1964, when Egypt achieved fourth place.
