CAIRO - 25 March 2023: Egypt defeated Malawi 2-0 on Friday night in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers to achieve their first victory under their Portuguese manager Rui Vitória.

Mohamed Salah opened the score with an expert finish from inside the area while the second goal came minutes later after Omar Marmoush's shot was converted by Malawi's defender into his own net.

Salah reached a new milestone in his career with the Pharaohs after scoring his 50th international goal but he still second in the list of Egypt national team's all-time top scorers behind Hossam Hassan who scored 69 goals.

This victory put the Pharaohs atop of the group standings with six points alongside Guinea who defeated Ethiopia 2-0 later on Friday.

"We deserved the three points. We were stronger and we had the upper hand. We dominated the game and created many chances. We should have scored more but we are happy with the performance and the result." Vitória said in the post-game press conference.

The Pharaohs will travel to Malawi to face their national team on Tuesday in Matchday 4 of the AFCON qualifiers, aiming to strengthen their situation in the group.
