CAIRO-12 June 2021: Mahmoud El Wensh, Zamalek and Egypt national team defender stated that he hopes to be one of the three over-aged players, who will be included in the national team squad for the competition.

El Wensh’s name has emerged as one of the main candidates for one of the three places that will reinforce Egypt’s squad in the competition.

“It would be an honour to play at the Olympics and represent my country but everything is in the hands of the team coach Shawki Gharib.” El Wensh stated.

Gharib announced earlier that Liverpool Egyptian winger Mohamed Salah booked his place in the list but he did not make his choice on the other two over-aged players that will join the team.

Egypt U-23 national team has been drawn in Group C of the Tokyo Olympic Games alongside Spain, Argentina and Australia.

The Pharaohs will start their mission against  Spain on 22 July before facing Argentina three days later. Egypt's last group stage game will be played on 28 July against Australia.

Egypt qualified for the Olympics after clinching the U-23 Africa Cup of Nations title at home in November 2019.

The Olympic Games in Tokyo will see the 12th appearance for the Egyptian football at the competition and the Pharaohs aim to secure a medal at the competition for the first time in the history.
