CAIRO – 19 December 2019: Despite being about 630 years old, Khan al-Khalili bazaar in the historic center of Cairo is still an attraction to many Egyptian and foreign visitors, who admire souvenirs and handmade traditional crafts.

Sabry said that this her favorite place to buy jewelry and eat “feteer,” a layered pastry and an Egyptian word for pie.

The place is “so lively. You’ll find shop owners calling you over. You’ll find people inviting you for tea,” she said. “I love the people here. It’s probably my favorite … thing about Khan al-Khalili.”

“It’s everything that Egypt is in one place,” she said.

Built in the 14th century, Khan El-Khalili is a loud, crowded and colorful bazaar full of all kinds of Egyptian goods. It dates back to Emir Dajaharks Al-Khalili, he built the large market complex on the site of the Za’afran Tomb, which had been the burial place of the Fatimid rulers of Egypt. The market is in the original Mamluk style, which features great archways and vaulted ceilings.

On 8 May 2019, Egypt signed an agreement with CNN to promote tourism through implementing an international tourism campaign. The campaign will use different platforms, including television, as well as digital and social media sites.


On January 4, 2019, CNN Travel published their annual list of top destinations for the year, placing Egypt in Second place, after Christchurch, New Zealand.
