CAIRO – 12 June 2017: You have the chance to watch what is remaining of Egypt's exorcism traditions in Makan, the Egyptian Centre for Culture and Arts, Wednesday.

Mazaher ensemble will perform at Makan in the Saad Zaghloul district of Cairo June 14 at 9 p.m. The band, whose lead singers and dancers are female, presents zar ritualistic music and dance.

Umm Sameh, Umm Hassan and Nour el-Sabah are original zarrists, and are some of the few remaining in the country. They are known for their strong voice, passionate dancing and control of their voice.

Zar originally comprised three styles which were later mixed together: Upper Egyptian zar, Abu Gheit zar and the Sudanese zar. Mazaher ensemble focuses on the artistic side of the tradition, which is already disappearing in Egypt.

Tickets cost LE 40. You wouldn’t want to miss this musical legacy.

Makan currently hosts two main bands: a Nubian Island group preserving the Nubian music and Mazaher ensemble.
