Egypt’s Grand Museum to be run by private sector: Min. of Tourism

CAIRO – 25 January 2019: Egypt’s Grand Museum is to be launched in 2020 and its complete management is expected to be either international or domestically private, as part of the government plan to step away from managing many of the ancient sites, according to Egypt’s Minister of Tourism Rania Al Mashat.

In a CNN interview, Mashat added that this considers to be a big change, as the government is taking the private sector seriously and working towards engaging them in all the country’s sector to achieve profits and success.



“We are thinning different about the tourism sector, which 98 percent of it led by the private sector, and this is something we are very proud of” Mashat added.

Talking about the Museum, Egypt’s Minister of Tourism said that the government is very excited about this project. “From inside the Museum you have all these monuments and it is very old and ancient, but from the outside it is very contemporary, which reflects the message we want to give to the world. We are very old civilization but we do have modernity” Mashat stated.

Mashat also pointed out that when she first took the sector she wanted the 17 SGDs (Sustainable Development Goals) to be key component from Egypt’s message to the world through tourism, explain that the government is trying to embed these principles (SGDs) with the private sector.

She added that Egypt have today ten percent of hotel rooms aligned with the green star certification. “We are changing the norms of evaluations to the starts, and in the new norms we are going to include environmentally sensitive aspects in hotels.” Mashat said.

She noted that last week one of Egypt’s biggest hotels moved to the solar energy generation to allow more resources to be used within the industry and help boosting the message.

Mashat also affirmed that Egypt is a destination to everybody’s budget and interest, adding that the country has diversity on its visitor’s base, which is not necessarily consisted of high or law spenders, especially with Egypt ranked second highest destination on the list for 2019.

Regarding the government security measures to maintain safety, Mashat said that country is doing everything it can so the tourists’ visit to Egypt is “enjoyable and safe”.
