The main founder of the palace was Prince Mohamed Ali, son of Khedive Mohamed Tawfiq, who was born in 1875 and died in 1945. Ali drew all the architectural plans and decorations for the palace himself. The palace stands as a mere reflection for Ali’s love for Islamic art in all its shapes.

Standing as an epitome of the Ottoman dynasty, the palace entails five separate and distinctively styled buildings, surrounded by a Persian-styled garden within a larger extensive landscape garden, along a small branch of the Nile.

Located on Manial Island in southern Cairo, the palace has been preserved by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities since 1955. Being a public art and history museum, the palace reflects the settings and lifestyle of the late 19th- and early 20th-century Egyptian royal prince and heir apparent.
