Eid always leaves a print in our hearts long after it passes. I still remember the unforgettable Eid days when I woke up so early to catch up with my cousins and siblings, eager to wear my new clothes, and the sound of Takbeer filling the air and surrounding our house.
Ask any adult about their most treasured moment, and somewhere in the answer, you will almost find Eid.
However, those memories didn’t make themselves; someone cooked that meal. Someone sat to wrap a toy or an Edeya; that someone is one of our parents.

This Eid al-Adha, here are five ways to recreate those memories with your children in a way they will carry with them for years.

Decorate Your Home Together.

The key to entering Eid in a festive mood, is to start small and allow the celebratory vibes enter the home.
Decoration is not something that only brings joy externally through balloons and shimmering foil curtains, it’s also about the collaborative process between the family. It helps to unleash their creativity and creates a nice tradition that will be carried later on in life.

Bring your children into that process, let them cut, glue, paint, and hang, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s more about making fun art that is not too serious.
Younger children will engage in that experience as they will delight in the textures and colors, whether making paper lanterns or handmade Eid banners strung across the doorway. Older ones can do even more by designing DIY decorations. As these things will make them proud of themselves when guests arrive
That way, you are giving your child the feeling that this celebration also belongs to them.

Cook and Bake the Feast Together

A grand meal is the heart of Eid al-Adha; the kitchen is the most important place where family bonding takes place. Sure, cooking can be exhausting but when done right and when everyone particpates, it can be a bit fun.
The young kids can wash, stir, observe, and decorate, while older children can measure, season, and learn. Even baking a batch of cookies carries warmth on this special occasion.

Saying the Takbir as a Family

The Eid takbir is not something simple; it is a thread that connects your children to something larger than themselves, to faith and to family.
Even babies can absorb the rhythm of the takbir. When you say it together as a family, you are not just observing a ritual; you are giving your children a memory with a sound that will definitely last the longest.

Give Back Through “Donations” and Let Your Children Lead it.

Generosity must be felt, to be taught and it all starts from the beginning with the smallest gestures.

This Eid, sit with your child and let them choose something to give from a shop or even from their own stuff. Wrap it together and give it away together as well.

Visit Family Without Rushing To Leave

Reunions are the soul of Eid. The cousins who haven’t seen each other for a while and the big family home that feels like it has a world of its own, with its loving chaos. Every corner of this house tells a story about your childhood, and your children deserve the chance to write their own version of it.

My advice is not to rush these visits. Let your child play until they are tired. Let the conversations run long, as these are the hours that will last and will always be remembered. The feelings of these gatherings, not the event itself, but what it leaves in the bottom of their hearts.

Lastly, you don’t need to do everything perfectly. The feast doesn’t have to be flawless, nor the decorations, as they don’t need to be Pinterest worthy as well. So don’t be hard on yourself as a parent; your children will not remember the perfection of it. They will remember the beautiful and fun memories, sitting beside them and wrapping the gifts and Edeyas.
Eid is a day. But what you build inside it lasts a lifetime.
