It serves as a prime example of the natural resources of southern Egypt, hosting diverse mountains, medicinal plants, and wildlife. The extraction of precious minerals has also made it an important mining center for decades.

 

 

Location and environmental significance of the village

 

Abu Ghosoun is situated within the Wadi El Gemal Protected Area, making it one of the most prominent environmental landmarks in the Red Sea Governorate. It is the second largest village within the reserve, having developed around the Nasr Mining Company on the coastal road connecting the Red Sea to the rest of the country.

 

 

 

The varied topography of Abu Ghosoun village gives it a unique natural character and provides a suitable environment for many medicinal plants and rare trees.

The village is renowned for its extraction of rare and valuable minerals such as: ilmenite, which was once exported to Switzerland for use in aircraft manufacturing. Other minerals include: granite, sulfur, talc powder, and precious stones. The village also hosts an ancient seaport that was used to export these resources worldwide.

 

Most of the local population works in herding and fishing, but they possess extensive knowledge of the types of minerals and their locations within the village's mountains.

 

Numbering no more than three thousand, they have a deep understanding of the local customs and traditions of the Ababda tribe and are committed to preserving their cultural heritage.

 

The women of the village excel in crafting traditional handicrafts, which are sold in the Wadi El Gemal National Park. This contributes to improving the standard of living for families and adds significant economic and touristic value to the village.
