It’s almost the new year, and everyone has already gotten their planner, has their money ready to spend on gym memberships, and everyone is reciting the “new year, new me” mantra. To be optimistic and ambitious for a new start is admirable, but breaking bad cycles and starting with a clear mindset is not an easy task; that’s why we don’t always keep up with these resolutions.

It all boils down to having very high expectations and goals that you want to achieve in a short period of time. We start up all giddy and excited to follow through on our resolutions, only to feel burnt out, and we eventually give up.

We feel disappointed and ashamed of ourselves for not moving forward with the plans we had made; however, there’s a way to avoid feeling trapped, exhausted, and overwhelmed by the number of wishes we want to achieve this year, and it’s called being realistic.

The truth is a hard pill to swallow, but let’s be honest: when we enforce larger-than-life and highly unrealistic expectations for ourselves, even though we have literally come out of the previous year drained, we are setting ourselves up for failure.

The key thing you need to set up when making new resolutions is to be grounded, then go gradually from there. Here are some examples of realistic New Year's resolutions to follow.

Don’t Subscribe to A Year Gym Membership
A mistake that we all fall over. Our excitement to be healthy and be in good shape makes us blind to spending money wisely, and we end up subscribing to a year-long gym membership without actually going.
We’ve been there, done that. Yes, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to be in shape and taking care of yourself, but if you already have commitment issues or are swamped with work or family matters, then don’t make your plate overflowing with tons of things you cannot handle.

Start small, and guess what? You don’t have to actually go to the gym on the first day of the year. Shocker, I know. Maybe start with an online trainer or download fitness apps that have 10-minute workout routines that can easily help you regain some muscles and stamina, then, when all things are clear & your schedule is less hectic, you can sign up for the gym.

Do A Money Wrapped and Identify Reckless Spending Habits.
Just like Spotify wrapped, you can do money wrapped and check your spending habits. Identify how much money you spend on beneficial items and which subscriptions bleed you out.

Once you see your spending habits and detect what went wrong and what went right, you can make a plan to spend your money wisely and be smart on when to save and when to splurge.

Reexamine Your Relationships & Cut Ties to Toxic People
Since we are already looking for a new chapter in our lives, it’s time to do some reflections on relationships. It doesn’t have to be a partner; you can reexamine your relationships with friends, family, coworkers, and see if you work well together, and if it's based on toxicity and animosity.

Be objective, state your flaws and features, and don’t let your prejudice or vindictive side take over your judgment.Even if it hurts to end things with the people who hurt you, it’s going to hurt more if you don’t take an assertive action and allow yourself to heal.

Also, acknowledge that you might have wronged someone and work on asking for forgiveness and bettering who you become later in life.

There you have it, don't set yourself up for failure and follow a realistic plan so you can feel a sense of achievment.
