So you met someone, felt there is some kind of chemistry and then they asked you on a date. You then get dressed nicely, keep thinking how it will go, then, to your surprise, and contrary to your expectations, your date is boring and dull, as if there were no chemistry at all.

Of all the bad scenarios that can go wrong on a date, a boring one is tough to handle. You begin to question what should be done without sounding like you are trying too hard. It is common that at that point you begin to wonder ‘Is it me?’ or ‘Am I the boring one here?’. But once you allow panic to take over, the situation will get worse. So, what can you do when you feel that the conversation has led to a dead end?

First things first, don’t make it all about you. You need to understand that the awkward silence doesn’t always have to be because of you or your problem. Some people are just not very talkative. In that case, you need to stimulate the conversation and find ways to bring interesting topics to the table.

People like to talk about themselves, so create some room for that. Instead of the very bland question of ‘Tell me more about yourself’, get them into a talk where they can speak about their passions, the things that excite them, adventures they enjoy, and so on. This kind of talk will create room for a deeper conversation.

Look around you for other conversation starters. If you just take a few seconds to observe what’s happening around you, you can pick a situation or two that can serve as a great conversation starter. Let’s say you are at a restaurant, just look around and you will definitely find something or to that can pick your interest whether a certain behavior or attitude. Then, you can use this as an inspiring topic to talk about or a reminder of a similar situation you’ve been in before where you can tell its story.

In the end, you need also to understand that where you choose to spend this date plays a vital role. Sometimes the problem is not your date, not you, but maybe the setup. Give it a chance, and if all else fails, you know what to do. Abort mission!
