The cold and dry weather of winter wreaks havoc on our skin, especially our hands. However, sometimes we neglect to look after our hands, especially our nails. As a result, our hands get drier and our nails become brittle and more prone to breakage. So, to keep your hands smooth and soft, and protect your nail from breakage in winter, follow these tips.

1. Wear gloves while washing the dishes.
Never wash the dishes barehanded. Hot water and dish soap together will make your hands very dry and cause nail breakage. Make sure you always have gloves on while you wash the dishes, not just in winter, but all year round.

2. Use cuticle oil.
If you don’t usually use cuticle oil, now is the time you try and see how it works wonders. Using cuticle oil on a daily basis softens the dry skin around the nails and protects your nails against splitting. You can also use jojoba, coconut, almond oil, and vitamin E.

3. Moisturize.
Apply hand and nail cream daily in the morning and at night to keep them soft and hydrated. Use creams rich in shea butter, vitamin E, and oils to get the best results. You also might need to keep a small hand cream in your bag to moisturize on the go whenever needed.

4. Apply base coat.
The base coat adds a protective shield to your nails keeping them safe from environmental damage. A base coat comes in many treatment forms and types to choose the most suitable for your needs. Plus, it will add a nice, subtle shine to your nails.

5. Focus on healthy eating.
Without a proper nutritious diet, none of the external use products will be of great help. Better skin and nails start from within. Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and consequently, your skin and nails will be hydrated. Eat foods rich in vitamin E, omega 3, magnesium, and iron. If needed, after consulting your doctor, take multivitamins rich in biotin and zinc.
