CAIRO – 11 October 2020: Egypt’s General Authority for Cultural Palaces, on its official Facebook page, celebrated the late artist Anwar Wagdy, under the slogan "The Greats of Our Country."

 

Anwar Yahya Wagdy Al-Fattal, better known as Anwar Wagdy, was born on October 11, 1904, in Cairo Governorate, to a family of Syrian origins. He loved cinema since his childhood.

 

His beginnings were in the theater, specifically in the Ramses Theater with Youssef Wahbi, through a minor role in the play "Julius Caesar". 

 

He participated in most of the theater’s plays, and started moving between different theater groups, where he ended up in  the Abdul Rahman Rushdie Ensemble, before finally settling in the "National Troupe" and worked there for several years.

 

Wagdy headed to the world of cinema at the hands of Youssef Wahbi, and appeared for the first time in a small role in the movie “El-Magd el-Khaled [Eternal Glory]. He performed numerous secondary roles until he began performing the lead roles. 

 

Also, Wagdy not only acted in his cinematic journey, but also wrote, directed and produced. He was a man of cinema in a comprehensive manner, and achieved undeniable success on various levels. 

 

Wagdy died after suffering with illness on May 14, 1955, at the age of 50.
