CAIRO - 10 June 2020: The Bibliotheca Alexandrina’s Center for Studies and Programs for Academic Research will organize a series of virtual lectures with the participation of Nobel laureates in various scientific fields on June 11.

This comes in cooperation with the regional Arab partner of the World Academy of Sciences for Developing Countries.

The first lecture will be given by Sir Richard John Roberts, Nobel laureate in Physiology and Medicine in 1993.

He is currently the scientific chief executive of the Biological Laboratories of New England, USA. Roberts is originally a British biochemist and molecular biologist.

The lecture will be given in English under the title "Truth and Fiction on GMOs." The lecture will be moderated by Rami Aziz, head of the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Cairo University.

The lecture will cover the technology of genetically modified organisms and the safety of this technology and will shed light on whether modified crops contribute to solving the problem of hunger and malnutrition, especially in poor countries.

In addition, the lecture will address some examples of how genetically modified organisms have solved a variety of problems facing humanity.

Furthermore, Mostafa el-Feky, director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, stressed the library’s keenness to host prominent scientific and international academic personalities, especially the Nobel Prize-winning scholars, to allow the Library of Alexandria’s audience to benefit from the knowledge, science and expertise of these distinguished scholars, and to achieve the mission of the library to be a center of excellence in the production and dissemination of knowledge.

The online lecture comes in line with the BA’s efforts to spread knowledge, and provide its services to a wide range of the public in the context of combating the novel coronavirus.
