Disinfecting archaeological sites as a precautionary measure taken by the state to combat the novel coronavirus - ET

CAIRO - 22 April 2020: Egypt’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has completed the second and third stages of disinfection of some archaeological sites and museums across the country.

Special teams were formed to carry out cleaning and disinfection works every 48 hours. This comes within the framework of the efforts of the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities to thoroughly apply the precautionary measures to combat the novel coronavirus, and follow-up to complete disinfection of the various museums, archaeological sites and administrative buildings of the ministry.

Head of the Egyptian Antiquities Sector at the ministry Ayman Ashmawi stated that the third phase of disinfection has been completed for Dahshur and Al-Lasht archeological area. This is in addition to Saqqara Necropolis, which included cemeteries, pyramids and a lounge for VIP visitors, as well as the Dandara Temple and the Temple of Meritamen in Akhmim and its administrative building, for the second time.

General Coordinator of Al-Moez Street Sherif Fawzi referred that the headquarters of the General Administration of Historic Cairo in the Citadel was sterilized, in addition to the ministry's Research Center, Al-Moez and Gamaliya Streets.

Head of the Museums Sector Moamen Othman indicated that the sterilization and disinfection works have been completed at the Matrouh Museum and the Rommel Cave in Matrouh.

Moreover, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities confirmed that it has completed sterilization and disinfection of all hotel establishments in all Egyptian tourist destinations.

Assistant Minister for Quality Control of Tourism and Hotel Establishments Abdel Fattah el-Assi clarified that all restaurants that provide delivery services are sterilized periodically.

As for closed restaurants, Assi stated that the ministry has coordinated with the Chamber of Tourist Establishments to take all necessary measures to sterilize these facilities, stressing that it will not be allowed to run again until it is completely disinfected work.

It is worth noting that disinfection is carried out in accordance with the international standards and under the supervision of the Egyptian Ministry of Health and Population.
