CAIRO - 25 February 2020: In 1999, Egypt’s Presidency Office summoned artist Mohamed Thabet to the presidential residence, to design a statue of late President Hosni Mubarak with his grandchildren to present it to him on his birthday.

Thabet said in previous statements to the press that on Mubarak's birthday, the family used to give him a valuable gift, often priceless, made of gold or silver. When they noticed his great love for his grandchildren, they thought a statue of him with his grandchildren would make him very happy.

Thabet pointed out that the statue was 65 cm in length, 27 cm in diameter and 70 cm in width.

The artist further stated that if the statue was made of bronze, it would take approximately 10 kilos of bronze.

'The statue is made of polyester and seashells, giving the feel of being made of ivory or alabaster," the artist added.

Thabet also noted that the Presidential Office asked him to sign a declaration once he handed over the personal photos of Mubarak and his grandchildren upon the completion of the artwork to never display them in the audio-visual and print media.

It is noteworthy that former President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak passed away on Feb. 25, at the age of 92, after years of struggling with illness.
