CAIRO - 29 December 2019: The cultural and the artistic scene in Egypt was very rich in 2019. Numerous events, festivals, concerts, conferences and seminars took place this year. Before we say goodbye 2019, Egypt Today will give its readers glimpses on what happened this year in the cultural and artistic sector.

38- The Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF) ran from March 29 -April 21 at different venues in Downtown Cairo.

39- Ismailia International Film Festival for Documentaries and Shorts concluded its 21st edition on April 16.

40- Google honored acclaimed late Egyptian painter and feminist Inji Aflatoun on April 16 with a Google doodle to celebrate what would have been her 95th birthday.

41- The Ministry of Antiquities organised the third edition of the Egyptian Heritage Festival in the Egyptian Textile Museum on April 18 which coincides with the International Heritage Day.

42- Famed international rapper and singer French Montana performed for the first time in Egypt on April 12.

43- Veteran actor Mahmoud el-Gendi passed away on April 11.

44- Cairo Steps performed in Berlin on April 17.

45- On April, In a live streaming on Discovery Channel, Egyptian director of photography Ahmad al Morsy joined a team of archaeologists in unearthing a Pharaonic tomb.Led by renowned adventurer Josh Gates and TV personality Chris Jacobs, the live broadcast was premiered under the title "Expedition Unknown: Egypt Live" and tracked the digging into an archaeological site in Minya governorate, Egypt. The rare incident was joined by renowned Egyptologist Zahi Hawass and Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities Mustafa Waziri.

46- Famed Lebanese singer Carole Samaha performed in a concert titled Helm (Dream), alongside late Egyptian iconic singer Abdel-Halim Hafez using hologram on 19 April at Manara Hall in New Cairo. This was the first hologram concert to be held in Egypt, and the first in the world to feature Abdel-Halim Hafez.

47- Egyptian mega star Amr Diab, famed British singer James Arthur and famed Turkish record producer Mahmut Oran performed in the grand ceremony of the American University in Cairo's centennial on April 19.

48- Prominent Egyptian singer Tamer Hosny received the Murex D’or award for best male Arab singer on April 6 in Lebanon.

49- The fifth edition of Alexandria Short Film Festival kicked off from April 3-8.
50- The Supreme Council of Culture organized a Women's Forum in celebration of the International Women's Day and the Egyptian Women's Day on April 2 at Cairo Opera House.

51- American actor and basketball player John Salley arrived in Cairo for a three-day visit. The American star gave a speech at the Creativity Industry Forum held from March 26-27.

52- The exhibition "Tutankhamun: The Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh" was inaugurated in Paris on March 23.

53- Egyptian singer Sherine Abdel Wahab has officially been outlawed from singing for insulting her home country in a concert performance, the Musicians Syndicate announced in a statement released on March 21.
Egyptian lawyer Samir Sabry submitted a complaint against the Egyptian super star to the Egyptian general prosecutor accusing her of insulting Egypt .‘’ I can talk here with complete freedom, in Egypt anyone who talks freely is going to be jailed’’ said Abdel Wahab during her concert in Bahrain.

54- The eighth edition of Luxor African Film Festival was held from March 10 to 21, and bears the name of Burkinabé filmmaker Idrissa Ouédraogo. While paying a special tribute to Tunisian cinema, LAFF honoured a number of renowned African filmmakers including Egyptian actress Lebleba, Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, Egyptian actor Asser Yassin, Burkinabé director Fanta Régina Nacro, Egyptian director Omar Abdel-Aziz and Sudanese singer Faiza Amseeb, Tunisian producer Dorra Bouchoucha, Malmö Arab Film Festival director Mohamed Qabalawy, and others, in addition to a special tribute for Egyptian actor Mohamed Sobhi and a celebration of late Egyptian-Greek musician Andre Ryder.

55- On March 20, Google Doodle celebrates the life and legacy of Egyptian poet and essayist Gamila el-Alaily on the occasion of her birthday anniversary.

56- Minister of Culture Inas Abdel Dayem announced on March 17 the launch of the first Artistic Excellence Award, in cooperation with the Academy of Arts in Cairo, headed by Ashraf Zaky and the Academy of Arts in Rome. The award aims to encourage young talents and stress the importance of supporting them.

57- Alexandria International Book Fair kicked off on March 25.

58- Famed Egyptian singer Tamer Hosny, Puerto Rican star Luis Fonsi and Canadian pop star Avril Lavigne were chosen to perform the opening anthem of the 2019 Olympics set to be held in the UAE.

59- The Embassy of India in Egypt, in collaboration with Teamwork Arts, presents the seventh edition of India by the Nile Festival (IBN). This annual cultural festival, supported by TCI Sanmar, kicked off on March 5 and will run until March 17 in Cairo, Alexandria and Port Said.

60- The American rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers performed for the first time in Egypt at Giza's Pyramids on March 15.

61- Sharm el Sheikh International Theater festival kicked off on April 1.

62- The Upper Egyptian -American star Rami Malek has made it to the Oscars and received Best Actor award after his brilliant portrayal of Queen's main vocalist, the legendary Freddie Mercury, in "Bohemian Rhapsody" movie.

63- Aswan International Women’s Film Festival's third edition will kick off on Wednesday, Feb. 20 and will run until Feb. 26. Thirty two films will compete in the festival’s long and short film competition.

64- On February, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York announced that it will return a valuable artifact to Egypt after discovering that it was stolen from the country in 2011. The prized artifact is the gilded Coffin of Nedjemankh who was a high-ranking priest of the ram-god Heryshef in the first century BC.

65- The three Egyptian Soap Operas “Tayea”, “Ekhtefa” (Disappearance) and ‘’Khalsana Beshyaka’’ (Elegantly Ended) were featured on Netflix in February.
66- The 67th Egyptian Catholic Center Cinema Festival announced its awards during the closing ceremony on Friday, February 15.

67- President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi inaugurated the Cairo International Book Fair''s 50th edition on Jan. 22.

68- Veteran actor Saeed Abdel Ghany passed away on January 18.

69- Arab Theater Festival came to an end on January 16.
