CAIRO – 16 October 2018: During his visit to Al-Zaher Baibars Mosque in Cairo, Minister of Antiquities Khaled al-Anany said “The ministry is determined to get the rest of the procedures to complete the restoration works of the mosque.”

The minister was accompanied by a number of parliamentarians in his visit to the historic mosque.

Engineer Mahmoud Abdel Fattah pointed out that the first phase of the restoration works is all about getting the approvals and receiving the raw materials needed to renovate the mosque. Abdel Fattah said that the workers removed all the unnecessary weeds and within hours the rest of the unwanted grass will be removed completely.

In addition, Abdel Fattah stated that the walls and windows of the mosque will be completely renovated. Some old bricks will also be removed and exchanged by clay bricks, according to Abdel Fattah.

“The reason is that we are trying to preserve the archaeological character of the historical mosque,” the engineer reiterated.

Baibars was the fourth sultan of Egypt in the Mamluk Bahri dynasty. He was one of the commanders of the Egyptian forces that inflicted a defeat on the Seventh Crusade of King Louis IX of France. He also led the vanguard of the Egyptian army at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260, which marked the first substantial defeat of the Mongol army and is considered a turning point in history.

The reign of Baibars marked the start of an age of Mamluk dominance in the Eastern Mediterranean and solidified the durability of their military system. He managed to pave the way for the end of the Crusader presence in the Levant and reinforced the union of Egypt and Syria. The sultan even managed to subdue the kingdom of Makuria, which was famous for being unconquerable.
