CAIRO – 9 May 2017: The Standing Committee agreed to hold excavations near the passageway inside Babylon fortress which is 12-meters deep, discovered during the arrest of a group of people who were illegally excavating, said the director of antiquities of ancient Egypt, Mohamed Mostafa, Monday.
The decision comes after establishing a committee headed by the Director-General of Antiquities of Cairo and Giza which recommended excavations in the area.
It is worth mentioning that Tourism and Antiquities police arrested the defendants in October 2016, an excavation was conducted inside a shop located under the jurisdiction of Antiquities Protection Act.
The police carried out a campaign confirming the existence of archaeological evidence in the form of a pottery collection.
Babylon Fortress was an ancient fortress city or castle in the Delta of Egypt, located in the area today known as Coptic Cairo.
