CAIRO - 4 May 2017: Tom Cruise’s upcoming movie “The Mummy” to be released on June 9, witnesses the appearance of the ancient Egyptian Princess Amunet (or Ahmanet) portrayed by Algerian actress Sofia Boutella in a fictionalized characterization.

The film’s premise revolves around the main antagonist, the ancient Egyptian princess Amunet who was promised to be the new ruler of Egypt two thousand years ago. She was deceived by her father who wanted to pass the throne to his newborn son, so she kills him.

Unfortunately, Amunet’s plan is discovered and she is buried alive. In modern times, Amunet’s tomb is rediscovered by the American army, and she is brought back to life once again as “The Mummy”.

“It’s the first time that you see a female Mummy. She can’t be just a monster walking around scaring people, there needs to be something significant [in] her shining through,” Boutella said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

”To explore that psychology in her, what happened to her as a woman: Being deceived, because there’s a boy who comes into the picture all of a sudden,” she added.

The character’s name “Ahmanet” is similar to the ancient Egyptian princess Amunet, a primordial goddess in ancient Egyptian religion and the consort of Amun, king of ancient Egyptian gods. However, the movie’s story is fictional and not related to the real princess.

Princess Amunet was also portrayed by Eva Green in the American-British drama series “Penny Dreadful” and in “Stargate SG-1” TV series.
