CAIRO – 19 March 2018: The Temple Independent Theatre Company and Downtown Contemporary Arts Festival (D-CAF) announced the cancellation of the play “Before the Revolution”, written and directed by Ahmed el Attar, scheduled for Sunday March 18 and Monday March 19.

This is considered to be Attar’s own resolution which is based on the decision made by the Censorship on Artistic Works Committee to remove five scenes from the play, according to the official statement by D-CAF festival.

According to Attar’s artistic opinion, the removal of the five scenes will negatively impact the dramatic construction of the work of art. He sees that the censorship of these five scenes drains the play’s artistic and literary content, making it difficult for him to premiere the play in a complete way.

Attar has since applied for another censorship committee to watch the show on Monday March 19, to allow the committee to rethink its decision, hoping that they will allow it to be performed from March 20.

“Before the Revolution” is part of D-CAF festival’s events. The seventh D-CAF, which takes place from March 9 to March 29, launched the “Arts for All” initiative and the Disability Program in order to encourage wide segments of the Egyptian society to engage with the festival as Egypt Today has previously reported. The festival’s programs include dance, theater, music and films.
Stay tuned for more details.
