CAIRO – 19 October 2017: Swedish satirical drama “The Square” will screen as part of the Panorama of the European Film festival in Cairo, which will run from November 8 to 18.
Released on August 25, 2017, “The Square” sets its action with a contemporary art museum in Sweden, curated by Christian; a divorced father of two who does his best to be an upstanding citizen, supporting social causes in the name of altruism.
Driven by a desire to see his museum become a massive hit, Christian receives advice from his PR staff to create a controversial and unique performance-art display that would blow up on social media. He devises “The Square,” an enclosed area in the museum where people are told to act responsibly, which eventually backfires into disaster when Christian’s phone is stolen in the Square; his attempts to track it down lead to a ridiculous downward spiral.
Another storyline in the film features a dinner the museum hosts, where an actor named Oleg is instructed to behave like a savage brute while the guests dine, eventually taking things too far.
Directed by Ruben Östlund, “The Square” won the Palme d'Or award at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival.
