CAIRO – 9 October 2017: Darb 1718 will screen the works of director and producer
Maggie Anwar followed by an open discussion on October 9.

The screening includes three documentary films on Egypt’s most important artists; Faten
Hamama, Gamil Rateb, and Syrian Duraid Lahham.

The artists had pivotal roles in shaping and influencing Arab and Egyptian cinema as we know it.

Renowned Egyptian actress Hamama had a strong contribution to the Egyptian cinema. Born in 1931, Hamama had her debut in Egyptian screens in the film "Yom Said" (A Happy Day) which set the stage for her astonishing acting career.

Rateb first appeared on screens in 1946 in the film, "I Am the East." After at least a 20-year hiatus from Egyptian cinema, Rateb later returned to the screens with the film "Al-Kaddab" (The Liar). The iconic actor has also debuted in French and Tunisian cinema

Prominent Syrian actor Duraid Lahham is most known for his role in the film "Ghawwar." Fascinated by theater from a young age, Lahham started delving into the art scene after befriending artists, actors, and filmmakers.

Sabbah Qabbani later recruited Lahham after the Syrian Television was introduced in 1960. Their first project was a short series called "Sahret Dimashq" (Damascus Night).
