CAIRO – 4 October 2017: The hit American TV series “Beverly Hills, 90210” debuted on October 4, 1990 on Fox, becoming one of the network’s highest rated TV series and running for 10 seasons, from 1990 to 2000.

Taking place in Beverly Hills, California, the show followed the intersection of a middle-class family from Minnesota who adapt to the fast-paced, glamorous lifestyle of Beverly Hills, along with the conflict that brings. The original protagonists were high-school twins Brenda and Brandon Walsh, played by Shannen Dougherty and Jason Priestley. As they attend the fictional West Beverly Hills High School, they get tangled up in the lives of Beverly Hills’ natives, getting caught up in love triangles and drama as they grow up and graduate.

Among the themes the show dealt with were topics such as AIDS, domestic abuse, teen pregnancy, alcoholism, and even the South African apartheid. The show was produced as a way to encourage teenagers to examine their problems through characters they could relate to.

A continuation of the show, titled “90210”, aired on September 2, 2008, this time following a family from Kansas as they moved to Beverly Hills, along with giving some hints as to what became of the original characters. Another spinoff, “Melrose Place”, aired from 1992 to 1998 for seven seasons and was a soap opera related to the occupants of the titular location in California.
