The first session of the festival was held in Egypt in 2009. The Arab Theatre Festival is an attempt to spread the culture of theatre and performance studies and arts in the Arab world, promote Arab cultures, arts, aesthetics, and research in the domain of theatre and performance arts, combat the decline of theatrical cultures within the Arab world and support theatrical scientific research and the Arab theatrical writings for youth and adults. The festival held the largest scientific conference ever in the domain of theatre and performance studies organized in the Arab world.
