CAIRO – 6 September 2017: Camera and Microphone studio offers contemporary African dance classes. The classes will be taught by Nagham Salah Othman starting from September 20 to September 27.

Contemporary African dance is the extension of traditional African dance that has special movement and qualities interlinked with the contemporary dance that spread across Africa, in particular Francophone African countries after the colonization.

African dance is usually used in rituals celebration, funeral rites, burial ceremonies, and sometimes used as therapy. It has different styles based on the variety of cultures in Africa. Bending knees accompanied by the swing of a farmer’s machete is the most common dance style. As a result of slave trading, displaced people and colonization, and from their new environment African people began creating new styles of African dance.

Salah Othman has been a professional dancer since 2007, despite being a graduate of the faculty of economics and political science. She has participated in several workshops where she taught dance to people of different ages, the National Theatre Festival, Carthage Film Festival, and Contemporary Arts Festival.

She also organized contemporary dance shows by integrating different kinds of dance styles, such as hip hop, contemporary dance, and African contemporary dance.
