CAIRO – 3 September 2017: An iconic sculpture by the legendary Mahmoud Mokhtar was discovered accidentally while upgrading Saad Zaghlol Garden in Port Said.

The artist Essam Darwish found out that the statue in the garden is the original ‘the Farmer statue’ [El Falaha] that was created by Mokhtar.

What is shocking is the fact that the statue has existed for many years in unfavorable environmental conditions in the garden without being noticed by people.

Port Said governorate announced the discovery of the statue and that it will be repaired in Port Said National Museum.

Mahmoud Mokhtar is one of the legendary modern artists. He was born in 1891 and died in 1934. He is known for his iconic works such as Nahdet Misr. He is also one of the Egyptian arts pioneers.

He is considered the father of Egyptian modernism, and his efforts were the main reason for establishing The Egyptian Museum of Modern Art.

There is a museum in Egypt which carries his name and exhibits his work.
