Deadpool star Ed Skrein quits ‘Hellboy’ after sharp criticism

CAIRO – 29 August 2017: Actor Ed Skrein, known for his role as a villain in the ‘Deadpool’ movie, has stepped down from his role in the upcoming 'Hellboy' after complaints of whitewashing were leveled against him.

The character Skrein was to portray, Major Ben Daimio, of Asian descent in the original source material. In a statement, the British actor released on his official Twitter account, Skrein stated that he was not aware of the character's ethnicity when signing on for the movie, and in order to maintain cultural respect opted to step down to allow a more suitable actor;




Skrein's move was met by praise on twitter, including from the author of Hellboy himself, Mike Mignola;




Skrein also played Daario Naharis in ‘Game of Throne's’ third season and was the lead star of 'The Transporter: Refueled’, BBC News states. The ‘Hellboy’ adaptation is set to be directed by ‘Game of Throne's’ director Neil Marshall, according to the Hollywood Reporter, and will feature the talents of Milla Jovovich, Ian McShane and ‘Stranger Things'’ David Harbour.
