CAIRO – 27 August 2017: The Russian masterpiece ‘Crime and Punishment’ by Fyodor Dostoyevsky will be discussed in Road 9 Book Club on September 16.

‘Crime and Punishment’ is one of the bestselling books internationally; it is also one of the canonical literary books in World Literature.

It was published as a series of articles in a Russian literary magazine, and then it was published as a book of two parts.

The plot of the novel is mainly about a young man who kills a woman. The events and the conflict between the characters reflect the inner conflicts human beings experiences, and one’s deepest thoughts, and beliefs.

The characters express the reality of the Russian society from a psycho-socio perspective. It focuses on the psychological pain of the characters and the poor.

The novel also talks about different social phenomena such as crime, poverty, madness and others. Furthermore, it sheds light on the conflicts of the Russia’s economy.

‘Crime and Punishment’ has more than 25 film adaptations.

Dostoyevsky is one of the most famous authors around the world. He was born in 1821 and died in 1881.

Expressing human psychology and his conflict against himself and against society is the main characteristic of Dostoyevsky’s writings.

A detailed and deep analysis of the human being and society was his main purpose in writing.

‘Notes from Underground’ novella is considered the one of the first existentialist novels in history.

Among his most famous works aside from ‘Punishment and Crime’ include; ‘Karamazov Brothers,’ ‘The Idiot,’ and ‘The Gambler.’
