CAIRO – 10 August 2017: Archaeologists working on the Great Pyramid of Giza, aka the Pyramid of Khufu, believe that they are finally close to finding a mysterious hidden chamber deep within.

The team, called 'Operation ScanPyramid' from the HIP Institute, had discovered the supposed chamber last October, using non-invasive 3D scanning technology to examine the north edge of the pyramid 105meters above ground.

The team is currently looking over the data and preparing to use further technology such as infrared scanners and 3D reconstruction in order to hopefully pinpoint the exact location of the chamber. The ScanPyramid project was launched in October, 2015 in association with researchers from Cairo University's Faculty of Engineering.

However, doubt has been raised over the project. A statement released by the Egyptian Ministry of Antiquities last year cautioned that the results could be inaccurate and that more work needed to be done. This comes after the aftermath of a 2015 mishap, where Egyptologists who reported the discovery of Nefertiti's burial chamber in the Valley Kings found nothing.

Only time will tell if ScanPyramid's project actually bears fruit, or joins as yet another example of overambitious Egyptologists hoping for that was not there.
