CAIRO – 3 August 2017: Angelina Jolie’s ‘First they killed my father’ trailer was released by Netflix on Wednesday. The story of a daughter of Cambodia remembers her trials for survival from the genocide there. The film is due to be released globally and arrive on Netflix September 15.

The film is an adaptation of Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung book, recounts the horrors she suffered under the rule of the deadly Khmer Rouge. Jolie meet her when she was in a UN mission in Cambodia to meet some NGO workers. And then the turning point came when Jolie read Ung’s memoir book and decided to adopt the story but as a director, according to Vanity Fair.

“My son max helped me with the script not only because he is my son but because the movie is through the eyes of a child’ I did not want to see a child go through war, I wanted to know what a child felt.”

Jolie added “If you know nothing about Cambodia and you see this film, you just think that these are people passed through war but you will also know this; they are really interesting people, their roots, personality, humor, love of music, culture, it has to be at the end a love letter to Cambodian people,” Angelina told ONE media in February.

Jolie responded to recent allegations of child cruelty in casting for her movie saying that the allegations were “false and upsetting.” And in a Vanity Fair interview published on July 26, Jolie described a game played by the casting directors with the young Cambodian children auditioning for the lead role of Loung Ung.
