Dr. Abdullah Sami, lead researcher at the California Institute of Technology in the United States, announced details of a new scientific discovery published in the journal Nature, indicating the existence of an ancient ocean that once covered nearly one-third of the surface of Mars. The announcement came during a video interview with acclaimed TV host Ahmed Fayek on the TV program Egypt Can.

The researcher explained that previous studies since the late 1990s had attempted to prove the existence of an ancient ocean by tracing shoreline-like features on the Martian surface. According to the findings, the team identified a terrain boundary separating areas of ancient rivers and lakes from wider regions believed to have formed a vast water ocean, strengthening the theory that an ancient ocean once existed on Mars.

Mars is believed to have once been a wet planet containing rivers, lakes, and an ocean before transforming into the dry environment seen today. This could also provide insights into the evolution of Earth’s climate. The researcher emphasized that there is currently no evidence of intelligent or complex life on Mars, and that the studies focus solely on geological indicators of primitive

Sami pointed to a remarkable scientific paradox: the strong similarity between the surface features of Earth and Mars despite their different internal structures.
