Renowned production designer Mohamed Attia has received the Best Set Design Award for his work on EL SETT, by Marwan Hamed, during the closing ceremony of the 52nd Annual Film Society Festival for Egyptian Cinema held tonight at Cairo’s Opera House.
This is not the first award Attia has received from the Film Society Festival during his illustrious career; he previously won the Best Set Design Award for films including BAAD EL MAWKEAA, THE WALLS OF THE MOON, SONS OF RIZK, EHKY YA SCHEHERAZADE, and THE BLUE ELEPHANT.
Attia’s latest EL SETT tells the story of Umm Kulthum, tracing her journey from a childhood spent singing in rural Egypt disguised as a boy to her battle for acceptance in Cairo, her heartbreaks and sacrifices, and her transformation into the Arab world's most iconic voice, culminating in her historic 1967 Olympia concert.
The festival, held between April 14th and 21st, showcased eight Egyptian films from 2025 that received the highest votes in the general poll conducted among critics, filmmakers, and members of the Film Society. The lineup included Marwan Hamed's EL SETT, Karim Shaaban’s 6 DAYS, Khaled Mansour’s SEEKING HAVEN FOR MR. RAMBO, and Karim El Shinnawi’s THE TALE OF DAYE’S FAMILY.
Mohamed Attia is an acclaimed Egyptian production designer whose work bridges global prestige and large-scale cultural spectacle. Throughout his prolific career, he collaborated with leading filmmakers, including Marwan Hamed on THE BLUE ELEPHANT series, THE ORIGINALS, DIAMOND DUST, and EL SETT; Yousry Nasrallah on BAAD EL MAWKEAA, which premiered at Cannes, and EHKY YA SCHEHERAZADE; Tarek Alarian on the WELAD RIZK franchise, THE WALLS OF THE MOON, and THE CELL; and Ahmed Alaa Al Deeb on AL AREF: AWDAT YOUNIS.
Beyond cinema, Attia has built an impressive television repertoire with credits such as ABLA FAHITA EL DUPLEX (all seasons), ABLA FAHITA: DRAMA QUEEN on Netflix, Mohamed Yassin’s AFRAH AL QOBA, EL TAMANYA on Shahid, the 2023 Ramadan hit TAHT EL WESAYA starring Mona Zaki, and the 2024 Ramadan series EKHWATY directed by Mohamed Shaker Khodeir and starring Nelly Karim, Kinda Alloush, and Ruby.
He also ventured into theater with the musical COCO CHANEL, marking Sharihan’s celebrated comeback.
In parallel, Attia shaped three of Egypt’s most celebrated modern cultural events, the Pharaoh’s Golden Parade, the reopening of the Avenue of Sphinxes, and the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum, designing immersive environments that reached millions worldwide and showcased Egypt’s rich history on the global stage.
